Have you watched the newest Netflix series “Tidying Up with Marie Kondo” yet? Well, I have a confession to make. First, we don’t subscribe to Netflix (sorry, not sorry). So, secondly, I haven’t watched the show.
But I have been familiar with the KonMari method since I bought Marie Kondo’s book, “Spark Joy” last year. It’s a very comprehensive and detailed book that describes and shows you how to declutter and organize the KonMari way. I suggest you pick up a copy of this book if you want specific tips on how to go about your tidying mission.
As a work-at-home mom, I find Marie Kondo’s system of decluttering and organizing quite refreshing. Unlike other decluttering and organizing systems, KonMari places value on keeping things that “spark joy”. It’s not just about throwing away things mindlessly. It’s about seeing all the things that you have, selecting which ones give you joy, and giving them a “home” in your home.
Even if I started my Konmari journey last year, I must confess that I’m not finished yet. But in this post, I’m going to share with you some learnings I’ve picked up as a work-at-home mom.
Implementing the KonMari Method as a Work-At-Home Mom
Being a work-at-home mom is no easy feat. Yes, there are a ton of perks but I must say that things can go crazy and stressful at times. That’s why setting up routines and systems in the home is important. And that’s where the KonMari method comes in.
Begin with the End In Mind.
In her book, Spark Joy, Marie Kondo said that before you begin the tidying up process, you must have a clear vision in mind of what kind of lifestyle you want in your home. As a work-at-home mom, we want a home that is conducive to working, of course. We want a home that helps us work efficiently and allows us to be the best mom that we can be for our kids and a loving wife for our husbands. Beginning with that vision in mind helps us get motivated to tidy up.
Declutter To Clear Your Physical Space and Head Space.
Marie Kondo specifically recommended that you start with decluttering your space, by category, first. You start with the easy categories first, like clothing, then move your way up to the harder categories like sentimental items, i.e. photographs and memorabilia.
This is actually the best way to start when you want to tidy up your home. Instead of buying organizers to put in stuff that you don’t even use, declutter first. It helps you edit out the things that you really want to keep.
This is especially helpful as a work-at-home mom because we cannot let clutter rule over our schedules and stress us out. We have to edit. We have to choose which things really spark joy and which ones do not. Because those that do not spark joy doesn’t deserve our brain power and time in our schedules.
Having a Place For Everything.
Kondo has specific suggestions on how to organize and make a home for the things that we own. Knowing that each item in the home has a place, saves us precious time and effort from constantly looking for things. It’s also a great discipline for the family.
But Before You Apply the KonMari Method, Here are Some Things You Should Know
It’s easy to get excited to dive right into applying the KonMari method in our homes. But before you begin the process, here are some things that you need to know.
You Cannot Declutter for Everyone in Your Home.
This is most especially true for your husband and if you have older kids. You can only share with them KonMari’s way of tidying up. Respect the personal belongings of the people in your home.
The KonMari Method is a Process and a Discipline.
As a work-at-home mom, we have to take things one-at-a-time. Don’t let the mess and clutter overwhelm you. Intentionally put it in your schedule and enjoy the process.
