A few days ago, I came across a Facebook post by mommy blogger Badet of The Misis Chronicles. She shared that Landmark Supermarket Alabang has just opened. I got so thrilled with this news! My husband and I were actually about to head out that day to buy our groceries and I excitedly told him that we should check out Landmark. Then I realised that as a mom, grocery shopping is the next best thing to shoe shopping. Am I weird?
Grocery shopping has become one of the most exciting activities that I look forward to every week, ever since I became a mom. I like going through every aisle and checking out products that interest me. I don’t know but there’s just something about it that makes my eyes sparkle, our grocery cart full and our wallets empty…haha just kidding!
But yes, grocery shopping can get a little stressful if you don’t come prepared. What I mean is, there’s a tendency to overspend and buy things we don’t actually need. Or worse, we forget to buy what we really need. Brian and I were like this when we were just newlyweds a few years back. I didn’t really write down what we were going to buy and we end up not buying everything we need.
When Owen came along, we figured that we needed a grocery shopping plan. Since I’m a working stay-at-home mom, we cannot afford to spend time and money for several trips every week to the store just to buy something that we forgot. It’s costly and it’s also logistically difficult since we had a baby tagging along. Ever since then, we try as much as we can to plan our grocery shopping day.
And if you’re like me, and you want to enjoy your grocery shopping day, make sure you do these three simple things before heading out.
Make a meal plan.
The first thing that you should do before heading out to the grocery store is to make a meal plan. Plot out what you want your family to eat for the week. This also saves you the hassle of spending thirty minutes staring at your pantry or scouring through your refrigerator trying to figure out what to cook for your family. You can also plot out days when you will be eating out.
Make a grocery shopping list.
From the meal plan, the next thing that you should do is to identify what needs to be bought from the grocery store. Review your meal plan and see what ingredients you need to buy. Make sure you also check your pantry to see what needs to be replenished. Do also a quick scan of your cleaning supplies, toiletries and other miscellaneous items that needs to be restocked and include it in your grocery list.
Eat before you go grocery shopping.
Lastly, eat before you head out. From my experience, I learned that I tend to go overboard with grocery shopping when I’m hungry. I guess it’s because everything looks delicious in my eyes. This step is also crucial if you have kids tagging along. Make sure your kid is fed and content. This helps lessen the kid-trantrum-induced impulse buys just because your kid is hungry.
